Opus 1: The Adrenaline
As artists, we all experience the “Adrenaline of Art.”
For me, the adrenaline of art is the adrenaline of creation. From the inception of a creative idea, to the spark of inspiration, to the actual creative process, and eventually, to the thrill of completion. But we all experience and interpret artistic adrenaline in ways that are unique to our personal experiences. Our roles as the artist, the art, and the audience to the arts influence how we understand this feeling. All artists are different, all performers are different, and all art is different.
This photobook is an exploration of this concept; but it is also a celebration of everyone as unique individuals and artists. The unique colours, aesthetics, and concepts of each photoshoot come together to create a mosaic of artists. No two artists are the same, and thus no two experiences are the same. We all have a reason for creating and the experience of adrenaline that comes from it differs from each artist to artist; from each piece of art to piece of art.
I’ve been grappling with this throughout my four years at a university music program; where our output of art is constantly being measured, critiqued, and graded. Along the way, my passion and love for music was lost, and in a desperate attempt to find some other sort of creative outlet, I picked up photography as a hobby. I was absolutely fascinated by this medium of art, being so different from piano which I was practically raised doing. However, this honeymoon phase eventually faded, and this art, like music before, began to feel like a chore. The rush to create was gone, and I was once again adrift, looking for direction. Looking for adrenaline.
We all look for adrenaline. We all experience it… but what do we do when it’s gone?
This project has been over two years in the making. It has been a way for me to rediscover this adrenaline; the joy of creation. From the bottom of my heart, I thank every person that has accompanied me on this journey.
